Diving and Snorkeling
Curacao was born millions of years ago, developing under the sea from lava rock on which coral has grown for centuries. For millions of years reefs have surrounded the island, attaching to the shore like a narrow fringe. In some places they are like beautiful gardens, with delicate corals and are home to brightly coloured tropical fish. In others, massive coral formations extend into depths with deep-water fish patrolling the plunging walls. It is no wonder that diving is one of the most popular sports on Curacao.
Divers and snorkelers never seem to be able to stop talking about the beauty of Curaçao's underwater world. Let us assure you this is with good reason. We like to think there is no place in the world offering such great shore dives or opportunities to enjoy the beauty of sea's nature while snorkeling. Curacao snorkeling and diving encompass 40 different dive areas, which cover 65 individual sites.
Caves
The Hato Caves were formed below the sea level millions of years ago. With the Ice Ages the water level dropped down and Curacao was born. The Hato cave covers an area of 4900 m2, and is the home to the beautiful limestone formations, romantic pools, waterfall and our famous Madonna statue. Also inside the Cave is a colony of Seldon seen long nose fruit bats.
These caves had a utilitarian purpose during the early days of the slave trade in Curacao, escaped slaves used them as hiding places, and lived in them for months at a time. Even before the arrival of Europeans and slaves, the South American Arawak Indians used them for shelter, and left behind cave drawings, or petroglyphs, estimated at 1,500 years old.
Open seven days a week . Tours are on the hour starting at 10.00 to 16.00.
